Progression of Daylilies on tile- 4th fire

This is the 4th firing on the daylily tile.
At the start of this application of paint, I was quite sure that I would paint large leaves in the background to support the foreground. This would "pop" out the lighter colored daylilies in the foreground. After several trys , I was not liking that idea. The various colors were not right, it was too stong and I did not like the shapes I was using. Anyway, maybe it was the state of mind I was in, who knows. It was just not looking to my approval.
So I began to paint some softer neutrals of different tones...."shadows".......liking that........ Then I finally decided that just stem shapes and a couple of petals in the background would be enough. I like it better and I feel it gives it a softer "airy" look as opposed to the strong dark leaves that I wanted at first try. The shadow shapes needed to be light in value as not to distract from the main subject matter. The stems needed to be subtantial in size, like the ones in the forground. Some negative spaces left alone "silent", so to speak.
I will have one more fire and that will be to cover my whites, which will most likely be a soft, creamy yellow. But then, it will depend on my mood, right!
On to the kiln!!!!!
